Hand Arm Vibration (HAV) testing/monitoring is carried out by attaching an accelerometer onto the tool or equipment requiring assessment, at the point of hand/arm contact. The accelerometer and equipment then measures the vibration in three axis, the X, Y and Z axis in relation to the operators hand and arm.

Following this, we are then able to calculate the level of Hand Arm Vibration (HAV) related exposure of the operator over a typical day/week, and how long an operator should be using the tool for etc. If the operator uses multiple tools, this can also be taken into account.

Whilst manufacturers do sometimes provide Hand Arm Vibration (HAV) vibration levels of equipment, this usually is not reflective of the actual vibration levels, as this is a laboratory test, and not a realistic on site, i.e. an under-load test, and can be very misleading. The only way to accurately determine the levels of vibration for an employee, when used by an employee at work, is realistically to measure it in situ, which is where we are able to help.

When the daily exposure action value is exceeded, or if an employee has a history of Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), health surveillance should be carried out, consideration should be given to reducing vibration from offending items along with operator training etc. Where the daily exposure limit value is exceeded, all activities should be ceased, to prevent damage to the employee, and a review carried out etc.

Some medical conditions related to health issues either directly related or similar to include Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS)’, white finger, dead finger, white knuckle and ‘Raynaud’s’ disease. Where Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) may be developing or is present, varying degrees of numbness and tingling may be experienced, whiteness of body parts may be visible (in extreme cases blueness of the finger tips and even gangrene), along with other symptoms/phenomena.

Hand Arm Vibration (HAV) related conditions can result in employees being potentially un-employable in the future as we as humans use our hands to undertake most tasks.
